Understand your child’s chiropractic care.
Kids and Chiropractic FAQs
What does an ICPA Certified Chiropractor do?
An International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) Certified Chiropractor has additional post-doctoral training and clinical skills to treat pregnant women, infants, children, and teenagers. Our ICPA trained physicians, use a variety of low-force, chiropractic adjusting techniques to adjust pediatric patients.
Is it safe for my kids to receive a chiropractic adjustment?
Yes, chiropractic is one of the safest forms of healthcare for your child. Chiropractors do not use medicine or invasive techniques to treat your child’s health. Our pediatric chiropractors do not use the same chiropractic adjusting techniques on a baby or child that they would use on an adult.
Our pediatric chiropractors use low-force or instrument assisted adjusting techniques to treat children.
When should I take my child to a chiropractor?
There are many changes that happen to the body as it changes from an infant though adolescence. Chiropractors help the brain and nervous system develop properly through spinal manipulation. When the nervous system is performing at its best, the rest of the systems in the body can too.
According to Well-Adjusted Babies written by Dr. Jennifer Barham-Floreani, the top 10 reasons parents take their children to see a chiropractor are to:
- Maximize brain and nerve development
- Enhance overall health and well-being
- Strengthen immunity and reduce incidences of colds, ear aches, and general illness
- Help with colic
- Help with asthma, allergies, and other breathing difficulties
- Improve spinal posture
- Improve concentration
- Assist with behavioral disorders
- Alleviate bedwetting and digestive concerns
- Assist with sleep issues
How does chiropractic care help a child who is NOT sick?
The number one “illness” kids face is accidents. You may not realize it, but children of all ages fall or put a lot of strain on their body as they grow—learning to walk or ride a bike, carrying a backpack, or jumping and running around. If your kid participates in athletics, the twisting motion from swinging a bat or throwing a ball can twist the vertebra out of alignment in the spine. If untreated, the spinal misalignments can cause serious health issues through adulthood and affect the body’s development.
Chiropractors treat misalignments in the spine and other extremities. They do not prescribe medicine, but may recommend nutrition, exercise, or supplementation to help your maximize their health.
There are many different types of doctors and healthcare specialists, who is responsible for the health of my child?
You are. You are the one who knows your child best and should use your best judgment as to what is most appropriate for your child. Many patients bring their child to our pediatric chiropractors for natural primary healthcare when they want a recommendation about their child’s health.
We then refer to other members of your child’s personal health care team like their pediatrician, occupational or speech therapist, dentist, and others as needed.
Do all chiropractors treat children?
All chiropractic schools have pediatric courses that are required. Doctors of Chiropractic are also licensed in all 50 US states to provide chiropractic care to adults and children.
However, not all chiropractors take more than the minimum amount of courses required to receive their doctorate. Our pediatric chiropractors have completed postgraduate certifications through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and specialize in working with children.
